Jungle (1of2): Boat, Birds sightseeing and Cayman hunt
One hour drive from Cayenne, and off we go to a boat excursion over the Approuague river, in the commune of Régina. The protected Marshes of Caw.
Either we were late, or the guide was not ready yet 🙂 I must said that the Yamaha motor did an outstanding job. And we had spare gasoline yes xD
OPEN RIVER EXCURSION
The first excursion was in “open river”, still not really raining.
We saw lot of cattle dispersed.
Along the river, you come across other tourists boats, massive, or tailored trips like for fishing.
The guide spoke such a kind of local french that our colleague from Paris struggled quite at the beginning.
The experienced guide told us all the time, where to look at. One has to train the eye to see birds in the bushes..In fact, spotting a big variety of birds was the great fun and highlight of the excursion ! Here some examples. I reckon, the TC 2x on my 70-200mm was a kicker !! I could sub-order each bird in class and family, but maybe in next blog entry 🙂
We thought for 12 hours that Mucu-Mucu was a bird (next 2 pics) and really it sounds like a bird !! in fact turned out to be a plant :(. For us stayed a nice bird !
Their nests being a variety of forms and distributions…
All in all, after 2 hours and already heading home, we were having fun:
And then, like in he comics, no warning, a massive pour-down of water, the universal deluge, a flood of water down to us.
One even lost his cap… yes we turned back to get it !!. My camera rain-forest-cover played his first game.
After that, boat took us to our Jungle-Village (dedicated report, next entry)
NIGHT EXCURSION: CAYMAN HUNT
The guide prepared himself for his highlight “Cayman hunt”.
Believe it or not, with bare hands, splash in the water and took out caymans just like that.
Then he PASSED IT AROUND. The ladies refused. The trick being of course, pressing down the jaws and holding its tail strongly. The second pic is a cayman of roughly 4 months old
After all hold or at least touched the reptile and felt the expensive-Women-bag touch, the animal was thrown back in the water
We came across other similar Cayman sightseeing excursion, but their guide didn’t catch as many and as big as ours of course 🙂
In the second and final blog entry, details on the Caw settlement (cant be called even a village) where we spent the night. Bis dann !
